SUPER MARIO LAND for the ZX Spectrum 128K - version 1.0
=======================================================

An unofficial, non-commercial fan conversion of Nintendo's Game Boy game.
Super Mario Land (c) 1989 Nintendo. This conversion is not affiliated with or
endorsed by Nintendo. Free to download; please don't sell it.

The whole game - Worlds 1 to 4, the bonus games and the ending - in one 128K
load. Mario moves as the Game Boy's own code moves him, every enemy follows
its Game Boy script, and the music and sound effects follow the Game Boy's.
After the ending, or a game over, the game goes back to the title and 1-1
without reloading.

FILES
-----
  sml_128k_v1.0.tap tape: any 128K Spectrum (128, +2, +2A, +3)
  sml_plus3_v1.0.dsk +3 disk
  sml_128k_v1.0.sna snapshot for emulators (128K)

LOADING
-------
Tape On a 128 or +2 choose "Tape Loader" from the menu; on a +2A
or +3, "Loader". Then play the tape. At normal speed the whole
tape takes about 7 1/2 minutes. It also loads with emulators'
fast tape loading, and from SD-card interfaces that load .tap
files (DivMMC/esxDOS, the Spectrum Next, ZX-Uno).
            On a 48K Spectrum, or a 128K in 48K mode, it says "Needs a 128K
            Spectrum".

Disk On a +3, choose "Loader" from the menu.

Snapshot Open it in an emulator set to a 128K Spectrum.

Between Worlds 2 and 3, and on the way back to World 1 after the ending or
a game over, the game stops for a couple of seconds while it rebuilds the
other half of itself in memory. There's nothing to load.

KEYS
----
After loading, the game shows its keys and asks REDEFINE Y OR N.

N play with the keys shown.
Y choose each key in turn (left, right, up, down, jump, run and fire,
pause). The keys are shown again afterwards: Y to change them
        again, N to play.

Any key can be used except 1 to 0 (the Sinclair joysticks use them) and
Symbol Shift, and each key only once. Your keys stay for the whole game.
To change them again, load the game again.

  The usual keys:

    A / D left / right
W / S up / down (up only in the submarine and the plane)
    K jump (the Game Boy's A button)
J run and fire (the B button)
    H pause

Joysticks: Kempston, or a Sinclair joystick in either port (the +2 and +3
joystick sockets). Up jumps, fire runs and shoots. In the submarine and
  the plane, up moves up.

At the title, press jump or run (or fire or up on a joystick) to start.
In the bonus game, jump or fire stops the ladder.

CHEAT KEYS
----------
Symbol Shift + P power Mario up a step (small > Super > fire)
Symbol Shift + M / N skip to the next / previous level
Symbol Shift + C restart from the next checkpoint

A game key on one of these letters also counts while Symbol Shift is
held: with pause on P, Symbol Shift + P pauses as well.

DIFFERENCES FROM THE GAME BOY
-----------------------------
  - Sound effects play one at a time. The Game Boy can play several at once.
  - The frame rate drops in the busiest scenes (4-1 most of all). The
game's timers keep Game Boy time, but movement is choppier there.
  - After Tatanga the arena's blocks go a quarter at a time, each with an
explosion; the Game Boy wipes each block away a few lines at a time.
Some other details of the ending are simplified, and its text is drawn
    over the sprites.
  - A superball collects every coin it meets in a frame. The Game Boy
collects at most one a frame.
  - World 2's leaping fish come out of the water a moment late.

TESTED ON
---------
ZEsarUX: the tape on a 128K, +2, +2A and +3, at normal speed and with fast
loading, and the disk on a +3. It hasn't been tried on real hardware or
real SD-card interfaces yet. Reports are very welcome.

REPORTING BUGS
--------------
Please say which level, what happened, and which machine or emulator (and
whether tape, disk or snapshot). A screenshot or a saved snapshot helps a
  lot.

CHANGES.txt lists what changed in each version.
